How to Start a Campfire
Starting a campfire is an essential skill for outdoor adventurers. Follow these steps to safely ignite your fire:
1. Choose a Safe Location
Select a spot that is at least 15 feet away from tents, trees, and other flammable materials. Ensure that there are no overhanging branches. If it's allowed, use a designated fire pit.
2. Gather Materials
- Tinder: Small, easily ignitable materials such as dry leaves, grass, or wood shavings.
- Kindling: Small sticks or branches to help build the fire after it starts.
- Fuel Wood: Larger logs that will sustain the fire.
3. Build the Fire Structure
There are different structures you can use, like the teepee or log cabin method. For the teepee, place tinder in the center and surround it with kindling upright like a cone. For a log cabin, stack larger logs horizontally around the kindling, forming a square.
4. Light the Fire
Use matches or a lighter to ignite the tinder. Light it from multiple sides to allow the flames to grow and spread to the kindling.
5. Maintain the Fire
Once the fire is going, slowly add larger logs to keep it burning. Never leave the fire unattended and always have water or sand nearby to extinguish it if necessary.
6. Extinguish Properly
When finished, douse the fire with water, stir the ashes, and ensure everything is cold to the touch before leaving.
Following these steps ensures a safe and enjoyable time around the campfire during your outdoor adventure!
