How Long Does a Skydive Last?
The duration of a skydive can vary significantly based on several factors, including the type of jump and the altitude from which you're jumping. Generally, a typical tandem skydive from 10,000 to 15,000 feet lasts about 30 minutes, including preparation and descent.
1. Pre-Jump Preparation
Before the jump, participants often undergo a brief training session. This usually takes around 20-30 minutes where you'll learn the safety procedures, body positioning, and what to expect during the jump.
2. Freefall Duration
Once you exit the aircraft, you will experience freefall. From 15,000 feet, the freefall typically lasts between 30 to 60 seconds before the parachute is deployed. The higher the jump, the longer the freefall. Jumping from 10,000 feet will result in a shorter freefall time, closer to 20-30 seconds.
3. Parachute Descent
After the parachute opens, the descent to the ground will take approximately 4 to 7 minutes, allowing for a leisurely glide where you can take in the scenery. This portion of the jump enables a moment of relaxation after the adrenaline rush of freefalling.
4. Total Experience
In sum, while the actual skydive portion lasts only a few minutes, the entire experience can take around an hour from start to finish, including briefing, jump preparation, and landing.
