How to Land When Skydiving
Landing safely while skydiving is crucial to ensure a successful jump experience. Here are key steps to consider for a safe landing:
1. Prepare for Landing
As you approach the ground, assess the landing area. Look for a clear, flat space free of obstacles. The altitude is usually around 1,000 feet when you should be preparing for your landing.
2. Check Winds and Adjust Your Position
It's essential to be aware of wind direction. Adjust your body position to maintain control and glide towards the designated landing zone. Use your arm and leg movements to steer if necessary.
3. The Landing Form
As you descend to about 20 feet, assume a proper landing position. Keep your knees bent and legs slightly apart, ready to absorb the impact. You should also look straight ahead, not down.
4. Flare Your Parachute
At around 10 feet above ground, pull down on the rear risers to flare your parachute. This action reduces your vertical speed just before landing, allowing for a smoother touchdown.
5. Touchdown
As you touch down, aim to land on your feet. If conditions allow, slide onto your rear to distribute the impact across your body. Remember to keep your chin tucked to avoid head injuries.
6. Roll it Out
If you land with some forward momentum, roll onto your side to dissipate energy safely rather than falling flat.
Following these steps can significantly enhance your skydiving experience and ensure a safe landing. Practice and learn from experienced instructors for best results.
