What is an Offensive Foul?
An offensive foul is a violation in basketball that occurs when an offensive player makes illegal physical contact with a defender in an attempt to gain an advantage. This type of foul interrupts the flow of play and results in a turnover, giving possession of the ball to the opposing team.
Types of Offensive Fouls
- Charging: This occurs when an offensive player runs into a stationary defender. The defender must have established position, meaning they have both feet planted and are not moving in the direction of the offensive player.
- Illegal Screen: An offensive player setting a screen must be stationary. If they move or do not give the defender a chance to avoid the screen, it results in an illegal screen foul.
- Pushing Off: An offensive player may use their hands to create space by pushing against a defender. This action is deemed illegal and results in an offensive foul.
Consequences of an Offensive Foul
When an offensive foul is called, the opposing team is awarded possession of the ball. Additionally, if a player accumulates a certain number of fouls (usually five or six, depending on the league), they may be disqualified from the game.
