What is Powerlifting Scoring?
Powerlifting is a strength sport that consists of three main lifts: the squat, bench press, and deadlift. Scoring in powerlifting is based on the best successful attempts recorded for each of these lifts.
Scoring System
Each lifter has three attempts for each lift. The highest successful lift for each exercise is recorded, and the total score is the sum of these highest lifts. For instance, if a lifter successfully lifts 200 kg in the squat, 150 kg in the bench press, and 250 kg in the deadlift, their total score would be 600 kg.
Attempts and Progression
Lifters and their coaches must strategically choose their attempts to maximize their total score. If a lifter fails their first attempt, they often adjust their strategy for subsequent attempts, balancing the risk of attempting a heavier weight with the likelihood of successful lifts.
Weight Classes
Competitions often include multiple weight classes, allowing lifters to compete against others of similar body weight. This ensures fairness and encourages competitive spirit among participants of varying sizes and strengths.
Final Ranking
Lifters are ranked based on their total score in their respective weight classes. The individual with the highest total score within each class is declared the winner.
