What is a Powerlifting Total?
A powerlifting total refers to the sum of the highest successful lifts performed in three specific exercises: the squat, the bench press, and the deadlift. Each of these lifts is performed in a competitive environment, typically governed by the rules established by powerlifting federations such as the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF).
In a powerlifting competition, each athlete is allowed three attempts for each lift. The highest successful lift for each category is recorded. For example, if an athlete successfully lifts 200 kg in the squat, 150 kg in the bench press, and 250 kg in the deadlift, their powerlifting total would be the sum of these weights: 200 kg + 150 kg + 250 kg = 600 kg.
The powerlifting total is crucial as it determines an athlete's overall performance in the competition and often influences rankings and classifications within their weight class. Lifters aim to achieve personal bests and improve their total over time, emphasizing strength and technique in each of the three disciplines.
