What are the Doshas in Ayurveda?
In Ayurveda, doshas are fundamental biological energies that govern our physical and mental functions. There are three primary doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Each dosha is a combination of the five elements - earth, water, fire, air, and ether, and each corresponds to different bodily functions and personality traits.
1. Vata
Vata is primarily composed of air and ether. It governs movement and is responsible for bodily functions like circulation, respiration, and nerve impulses. People with a dominant Vata dosha may be creative, energetic, and adaptable, but they can also experience anxiety and irregularity in their physical health.
2. Pitta
Pitta is made up of fire and water elements, associated with transformation and metabolism. It governs digestion, appetite, and energy levels. Those with a strong Pitta dosha might be assertive and competitive, but can also be prone to anger and inflammation if imbalanced.
3. Kapha
Kapha consists of earth and water. It provides structure, stability, and nourishment to the body. A balanced Kapha dosha leads to patience, calmness, and loyalty, but when out of balance, it can result in lethargy, weight gain, and attachment issues.

Maintaining a balance among the doshas is essential for optimal health. Ayurvedic practices such as diet, herbal remedies, yoga, and meditation can help individuals harmonize their doshas according to their unique constitution, or prakriti.
