How to Make Dal

Dal is a staple dish in Indian cuisine, made from lentils and spices, rich in protein and flavor. Here's how you can prepare it:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup lentils (yellow split peas or red lentils)
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp cooking oil or ghee
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions

  1. Rinse the lentils under cold water until the water runs clear.
  2. In a pot, add the lentils, water, turmeric, and salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Cook until lentils are tender (15-20 minutes).
  3. In a separate pan, heat oil or ghee. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle.
  4. Add the chopped onions and sauté until golden brown. Then add the ginger-garlic paste and green chilies, cooking for another minute.
  5. Stir in the chopped tomatoes and cook until softened.
  6. Combine the sauté mixture with the cooked lentils. Simmer for 5 additional minutes.
  7. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.
