How to Make Dal
Dal is a staple dish in Indian cuisine, made from lentils and spices, rich in protein and flavor. Here's how you can prepare it:
Ingredients
- 1 cup lentils (yellow split peas or red lentils)
- 4 cups water
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 2 green chilies, slit
- 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- 2 tbsp cooking oil or ghee
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
Instructions
- Rinse the lentils under cold water until the water runs clear.
- In a pot, add the lentils, water, turmeric, and salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Cook until lentils are tender (15-20 minutes).
- In a separate pan, heat oil or ghee. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle.
- Add the chopped onions and sauté until golden brown. Then add the ginger-garlic paste and green chilies, cooking for another minute.
- Stir in the chopped tomatoes and cook until softened.
- Combine the sauté mixture with the cooked lentils. Simmer for 5 additional minutes.
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.
