Exercises to Develop Viewpoints Skills
The Viewpoints technique is a dynamic approach to theater that emphasizes physical movement, spatial awareness, and the elements of time and space. Here are some exercises to help develop your Viewpoints skills:
1. Spatial Awareness Exercises
Engage in activities that focus on your relationship to the space around you. Walk around the space while noticing locations and distances. Experiment with different ways of navigating—fast, slow, with purpose, or in random patterns.
2. Shape and Gesture Exploration
Work on creating different shapes with your body using various levels, such as standing, crouching, or lying down. Combine these shapes with gestures that express emotion or intention to deepen your understanding of movement language.
3. Time Awareness
Practice moving through time by altering your speed and rhythm. Start with a slow movement and gradually increase your speed before slowing down again. Reflect on how these changes affect your presence and the energy in the room.
4. Group Activities
Participate in group exercises that encourage collaboration. For example, form a circle and have each person contribute a movement sequentially, responding to the previous movements. This builds connection and awareness within the ensemble.
5. Echo Exercise
One participant initiates a movement or sound, and others mirror it, creating an ‘echo.’ This enhances listening skills and encourages participants to be present with each other in the moment.
Incorporating these exercises into your practice can significantly enhance your Viewpoints skills, leading to more expressive and connected performances.
