How Do You Develop Your Melodies?
When it comes to developing melodies, my process often starts with a feeling or an image that inspires me. I like to create a mood first, whether it’s through a chord progression on the piano or an interesting sound I find on my guitar. This foundation allows me to explore different tonalities and atmospheres.
Once I have a basic musical idea, I usually hum or sing random phrases over it. I believe melody is all about the natural flow of your voice, so I try not to overthink it. I record these improvisations using my phone. Later, I listen back to identify hooks or phrases that resonate. It's important for me that the melody feels organic and catchy at the same time.
After establishing a solid line, I focus on its structure, paying attention to how it interacts with the lyrics, if I have them. I enjoy experimenting with variations and building dynamics throughout the song. Sometimes, I will also collaborate with other musicians, which can bring fresh perspectives and take the melody to unexpected places.
Ultimately, my goal is to evoke emotion through the melody. I often ask myself questions: Does it make people feel? Can they remember it easily? If the melody can connect with listeners on a personal level, I consider it a success.
