Who Discovered Penicillin?
Penicillin, the world's first antibiotic, was discovered by British bacteriologist Alexander Fleming in 1928.
Fleming noticed that a mold called Penicillium notatum had contaminated one of his Petri dishes containing Staphylococcus bacteria. He observed that the bacteria surrounding the mold were being destroyed, leading him to identify the antibacterial properties of the mold.
Initially, Fleming's discovery did not lead to immediate clinical applications. It was not until the early 1940s that scientists such as Howard Florey, Ernst Boris Chain, and Norman Heatley began to research its medicinal properties further, leading to the mass production of penicillin during World War II.
