What is High Jump?
High jump is a track and field event in which athletes attempt to leap over a horizontal bar placed at a specific height without knocking it down. It is an individual sport that emphasizes both technique and physical ability, combining elements of speed, strength, and agility.
Rules and Technique
Competitors must take off from one foot to clear the bar. The most common technique is the Fosbury Flop, in which the athlete arcs their back over the bar and lands on their back on the mat. The height of the bar can be raised incrementally, and athletes typically have three attempts to clear each height.
Scoring
Athletes are awarded points based on their maximum cleared height. If the bar is knocked off during an attempt, it is considered a failure. The athlete with the highest successful jump wins the competition. Ties are broken by the number of attempts used.
History
High jump has roots dating back to ancient civilizations, but it became standardized in the modern era, with its first official records noted in the 19th century. The event is part of the Olympic Games, showcasing elite level competition and athletic prowess.
