What is Loving-Kindness Meditation?
Loving-kindness meditation, also known as "Metta" meditation, is a practice that focuses on developing an attitude of love and compassion towards oneself and others. Rooted in Buddhist tradition, this form of meditation involves silently repeating phrases that convey goodwill, kindness, and warmth. The intention is to cultivate compassion not only for oneself but also for friends, family, acquaintances, and even those we may have difficulty with.
The practice typically begins with the individual sitting comfortably and closing their eyes. They focus on their breath, then gradually introduce phrases such as “May I be happy” or “May I be safe.” Once a sense of warmth and love is developed for oneself, the practice expands outward. This can include well-wishing for loved ones, neutral individuals, and ultimately all living beings.
